Legalize Marijuana

Legalization of Marijuana in the Philippines

A Health Movement

Cannabis, also known as marijuana among other names is a psychoactive drug from the Cannabis plant used for medical or recreational purposes. The primary psychoactive component of cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), one of the 483 known compounds in the plant, including at least 65 other cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are a group of substances found in the cannabis plant. Drugs containing cannabinoids may be helpful in treating certain rare forms of epilepsy, nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy, and loss of appetite and weight loss associated with HIV/AIDS. In addition, some evidence suggests modest benefits of cannabis or cannabinoids for chronic pain and multiple sclerosis symptoms. Cannabis can be used by smoking, vaporizing, within food, or as an extract.

The legality of cannabis varies wildly from country to country. While there’s a definite trend towards legalization, it is a very slow process. Many forward thinking countries such as Uruguay, Canada, Australia, the United States (but only in 420 card states, where citizens can use their California medical marijuana card), Medical marijuana is used to treat a number of different conditions, including:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Appetite loss
  • CancerCrohn’s disease
  • Eating disorder such as anorexia
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • Mental health conditions like schizophrenia and posttraumatic stress
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Muscle spasms
  • Nausea
  • Pain
  • Wasting syndrome

It is said that this drug can help cure diseases, including cancer, glaucoma, and AIDS. Other people claim that it is a great stress reliever and a useful medicine for pain. Even doctors prescribed this drug to people who have problems in sleeping and eating. But here in the Philippines marijuana is still not legalize. Many said that people will abuse it and that’s the reason why marijuana is still illegal to use.

Marijuana is not a gateway drug, it’s just the dealers persistently persuading their customers to try harder drugs because they know marijuana is not addictive. If they were to get them to at least try the harder drugs, they would get addicted and come back for more, giving the dealer never ending business. Also if it is legalized, marijuana can be taxed which would produce billions of dollars annually in profit which in turn would help our nation get out of debt. Cannabis farms can be set up as well, and growing and harvesting marijuana can become a profession thus lowering the unemployment rate. Cannabis has been used for over 10,000 years and not one single death has EVER been recorded. It is not addictive and is actually far less addictive than caffeine. What should be illegal is alcohol and cigarettes because many people are addicted to it and leads to death.
